Honoring Tribal Partnerships: The Puyallup Tribe of Indians
Celebrating Culture, Language & Legacy Through FIFA World Cup 2026™
The Seattle FIFA World Cup 2026™ Local Organizing Committee (SeattleFWC26) is deeply honored to partner with the Puyallup Tribe of Indians (PTOI) to celebrate Coast Salish heritage and elevate Indigenous leadership throughout the World Cup experience.
Grounded in respect, storytelling, and visibility, this partnership builds upon the Tribe’s year-round cultural programming and extends across key moments leading up to and during FIFA World Cup 2026™.
Cultural Celebrations & Storytelling
Canoe Journey Filming
In summer 2024, the Puyallup Tribe, a FIFA film crew, and SeattleFWC26 collaborated to document the Tribe’s participation in the Canoe Journey, capturing the beauty and significance of this ancestral voyage. Footage from the event will appear in FIFA storytelling materials and global broadcast content—sharing the spirit of the Coast Salish people with audiences around the world.
World Cup Coastal Protocol & Powwow
From June 19–21, 2026, the Puyallup Tribe will host a large-scale Coastal Protocol and Powwow, welcoming Tribal Nations and international Indigenous communities to gather, perform, and celebrate on the shores of the Salish Sea.
Welcoming Protocols
As the host Tribe for Seattle’s matches, the Puyallup people will lead welcoming ceremonies and cultural protocols, honoring the traditions and stewardship of the land on which the games take place.
Cultural Integration & Representation
Lushootseed Language Integration
In collaboration with SeattleFWC26, the Puyallup Tribe is helping to feature the Lushootseed language—the ancestral language of the Puyallup people—through the SEA&WIN mobile app, Fan Fest signage, and potentially within stadium and city branding. These shared words and phrases will introduce visitors to the living language and heritage of the region’s First Peoples.
Partnerships, Youth & Legacy
Allen Institute Partnership
A developing collaboration between the Puyallup Tribe of Indians and the Allen Institute will explore educational and cultural intersections between Tribal knowledge, science, and innovation—creating new pathways for learning and shared understanding.
A Living Legacy
Through this partnership, the Puyallup Tribe of Indians and SeattleFWC26 are setting a model for how major global events can honor Indigenous sovereignty, amplify cultural leadership, and create a legacy rooted in respect, visibility, and belonging for generations to come.
