Spring Sustainability Conference Provides Ideas for Greening the Seattle FIFA World Cup Experience
Civic, community, environmental, transit, and climate leaders gathered at Lumen Field on April 29th to participate in a multi-sector discussion on how to advance a true sustainability agenda for both the six matches that will be played in Seattle as well as the lasting investments the games can leave for regional environmental preservation.
Ideas ranged from maximizing use of transit and clean transportation– including light rail, electric buses and “last mile” solutions like bikes and scooters, to ensuring pedestrian improvements and wayfinding encouraging walking and engagement with Seattle’s parks and waterfront.
Other low carbon and waste-reducing efforts will include minimizing food packaging at vendors inside and adjacent to the stadium, continuing efforts to reduce food waste and ensure composting, and other innovations.
“Our commitment to hosting a truly “green” World Cup experience extends beyond the grass on the pitch,” said Leo Flor. “We are working with leading sustainable government partners including the Region 10 of the Environmental Protection Agency, City of Seattle, State of Washington, Sound Transit, King County Metro and our partners at Lumen Field to integrate environmental stewardship into every aspect of our planning– and using these games as a catalyst for innovation and progress.”
